Forget and Remember

Memories affect our spatial experience, we all have different feelings towards the same place, but what if the memory is fake.

The idea of the project

I want to show different people’s perspective of seeing the same place

Ideas development

Idea 1.

Show 3 family members’ perspective of seeing their home

Setting in the gallery

The room will be divided into 3 area

Baby

iPad screen to show the video

A baby chair

Father

TV screen to show the video

A sofa

grandma

An old TV to show the video

An arm chair

Video (using blender)

Use the first-person perspective

Goal of the characters in video:

Baby

To collect milk

Father

To collect coins

Grandma

To collect dirty clothes

#This idea is not used at last, because the goal of the characters is stereotype and too obvious

Idea 2.

Keep home as the location of the video

Cancel “baby’s perspective”, turns it into an invisible perspective of the project

Reset the goals of characters in the video

Mom

The mom has suffered from Dementia, so what she sees the home is different from her son, she sees the home as a horrifying hospital and sees her son as a demon. She wants to find a way to escape, she needs to avoid being found by her son during the escaping. The space and objects will always change its look every 1 min, for example, the toilet will change its location when the mom feels dizzy, also, the objects will be distorted. When the mom uses her ability to scan the place, she can notice the location of keys which leads her to get out.

Son

The other perspective is the son, he wants to find his mom and gives her pills when the mom is using her ability (actually is screaming, but the mom does not realize she is screaming in her perspective), the pills can force the mom to fall asleep and keep calm, while the mom thinks the pills and her son is going to kill her. In the son’s perspective, the home is a normal apartment. His goal is to lure his mom to think the pills are keys.

Final work

Background

The work is based on my family story, my grandma has suffered from Dementia for years, she forgot things and she became emotional. Sometimes, she has illusion, like she thinks she is in a hospital and wants to discharge by herself. She has a unique rule and logic in her world which others cannot understand and may feel nonsense. I want to present two perspective showing how my grandma and father see the same place, for grandma’s perspective, in “Forget”, she thinks the home is a hospital while for father, “Remember”, he sees home as a usual home.

Forget

Grandma wakes up and she feels confused, she just knows she wants to get out of the hospital by finding keys and reading books to find hints. She sees a lot of poisons in barrels and monsters which threatened her. After she finds the main door key, she opens the door, feels dizzy and falls asleep again, as the video is looping, it means she will wake up again and finds keys, the repetition echoes to the symptoms of Dementia: repeating things.

Remember

It is the father’s perspective, his goal is to give medicine to his mother in order to calm her down but grandma sees that as poison. Therefore, father tries to lie to his mother that the medicine is the key, in the video, the character changes the name of the healing medicine to key. Also, he writes some words on books because he wants to recall his mother’s memory.

Behind the scene: Walk through the map

It is something behind the scene, it shows the map of two homes. I built the two homes in one building, for the grandma’s one, it is lack of windows because she has no idea of the outside world and time, for father’s one, it is bright and full of windows.
